Conversion Upload
The process of sending offline conversion data (like phone calls) back to ad platforms (Google Ads, Facebook) so their algorithms can optimize bids and spend based on real business outcomes, not just clicks.
What is Conversion Upload?
Conversion upload is the feedback loop that makes paid advertising work for phone-dependent businesses. Here's the problem: Ad platforms like Google Ads optimize for clicks, not conversions. A plumber running Google Ads might generate 1,000 clicks per month, but only 80 convert to service appointments. Without telling Google which clicks converted, Google's algorithm has no way to improve — it treats a click from a qualified homeowner the same as a click from a curious non-customer.
Conversion upload sends qualified calls back to Google Ads, Facebook, or other platforms with enough information for their algorithms to connect the call to the original click. For Google Ads, the most reliable method is GCLID matching: you capture the GCLID from the landing page, store it with the call, and upload the call as a conversion. Google's backend matches the GCLID and attributes the call to the exact keyword, ad, and campaign that generated it.
For calls where GCLID wasn't captured (some iOS traffic, direct calls, etc.), probabilistic matching uses anonymized call data (time of day, geographic location, calling device) to statistically match the call to the most likely click. Probabilistic matching is less precise but captures conversions that would otherwise be invisible.
Once Google receives conversion data, its machine learning algorithm learns: 'This keyword converts calls at 8%, this one at 2%. Bid up on high-converting keywords, bid down on low-converting ones.' Over time, spend naturally optimizes toward keywords and campaigns that generate phone calls and conversions, not just clicks.
Conversion upload transforms ad platforms from click optimizers into outcome optimizers. Instead of paying for 1,000 clicks hoping some convert, you pay only for clicks that lead to conversations. For industries like insurance, legal, HVAC, and home services, this is the difference between a 2x ROAS and a 10x ROAS.
